Student Council

Student Council

We are delighted to have our Student Council Committee up and running again in St. Laserian’s School. St. Laserian’s School believes that the student voice is essential in helping to create a positive and welcoming school community conducive to learning and enjoyment. We encourage our students to play an active role and contribute as members of our Student Council. The Student Council has an important role to play in the organisation of school celebrations, school assemblies, extra-curricular activities, and some fundraising initiatives.

All classes have selected a Student Council Representative. Class Representatives attend the council meetings that will be held regularly throughout the year, facilitated by Ms. Nolan and Mr. O’ Sullivan. Discussions at our meetings help to develop skills such as listening, brainstorming, problem solving, decision making, respect and teamwork.

We have an enthusiastic and active Student Council that we are very proud of. We are all looking forward to working together for the benefit of our students and the whole school community. We have a great group of students on our committee and we are so excited to get going again this year again. We had our first meeting recently and have already discussed some great ideas that we look forward to sharing with you throughout the year.

Our Student Council Committee would like to wish all the students, staff and families in St. Laserian’s School a very happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.

Go Raibh Maith Agat.

Student Council Committee.

Our Green School Committee

Our school has been involved in the Green School’s Programme since 2006, led by teacher Mr. Kelly. In that time we have achieved seven Green Flags in the following order:

  1. Litter and Waste
  2. Energy
  3. Water
  4. Travel
  5. Biodiversity
  6. Global Citizenship -Litter and Waste
  7. Global Citizenship – Energy.

We are now in pursuit of our eight Green Flag: Global Citizenship – Marine.
For our current flag we are learning all about the Marine Environment. We took part in the Green Schools Marine Week where we learned about some of the species that live in our Marine Environment.
We have some wonderful work from Marine week adorning the boards on our Senior and Junior Corridor at the moment.
Part of the learning for the Marine flag involves examining the impact that plastics have on our Marine Environment. We conducted a plastics survey in our school to find out what plastics were being used.
From this the committee came up with the following proposals:

  1. Ban single use plastic straws from our school.
  2. Ban single use plastic bottles form our school. Students are encouraged to bring a re-usable bottle instead.
  3. Ban twistables and encourage the use of crayons or colouring pencils instead.
  4. Reduce the use of laminate sheets and use Poly Pockets instead.

These proposals were ratified by the Principal.
Looking forward to our whole school walk and Litter Pick along the Barrow on June 27th for our Day of Action.
