Both the indoor and outdoor amenities of St. Laserian’s school provide areas and activities which reflect the various needs of the students in the school; all areas are inclusive to ambulant and non-ambulant students. Our campus is bright, attractive, modern, and spacious.
Indoors, alongside our eighteen classrooms and resource rooms, is a suite of therapy and curriculum rooms.
- Light Therapy room: provides a calm and peaceful space for our students to relax and regulate.
- Soft Play: a stimulating environment for younger students; it is a safe place for students to explore and play alongside their friends, climbing and jumping, and rolling are proven activities which assist in improving gross and fine motor development.
- Sensory Gym: a structured environment furnished with specialised equipment, such as a climbing wall, trampoline, and platform swings. The gym assists our students to stimulate their senses, their vestibular and proprioception systems; benefits include improved body awareness, motor skills, communication, and social skills.
- Hydrotherapy pool: provides consistent warm water which helps to achieve physiotherapy and occupational therapy goals for our students as well as relaxation.
- Woodwork: Senior students participate in cross-curricular activities with Mr. Hogan and engage in age-appropriate practical activities such as the construction of bird boxes, window boxes, signage for the gardens, and seasonal crafts.
- Horticulture: Many classes enjoy their SESE education through practical outdoor learning, and classes tend to raised beds and window boxes to grow vegetables and flowers. The school recently erected a polytunnel to further support this valuable education and senior students participate in a Horticulture class with Mr. Hogan.
- Cookery Room: Senior students participate in our Life Skills program, which provides learning through practical everyday activities, promoting the independence of our students. Our cookery room is well furnished with waist height tables, sinks, cookers, fridge, dishwasher, and washing machine.
Outdoor spaces:
Outdoor classrooms: Situated at the front of the school in a courtyard, it is enjoyed by all age groups for reading, music, and student meetings such as Green Schools and Student Council. We recently installed a canopy to enable its use in wet or hot weather. We also have a newly developed outdoor classroom outside of Oak class for our senior students.
Football, soccer and basketball pitches are available for our junior and senior students. There is also outdoor obstacle course equipment available for student use along the pitches.
Playground: Our school has a gated playground which includes swings, a bucket swing, climbing apparatus with slide, and a roundabout for junior students to enjoy.
Additional swings are available outside of the playground, including our new we-go include swing, which was unveiled on St. Laserian's Day 2024. This allows our non-ambulant wheelchair users to enjoy the freedom and fun of a playground experience alongside their friends. This was generously fundraised for by The Rockville Centre St. Patrick’s Parade.
Trampolines are at various locations around the school, including inner courtyards, and are accessible to all age groups.
Fundraising for a walking/running track for students of all ages and abilities to enjoy around the perimeter of the football pitch will commence in the new academic year.
The links between St. Laserian’s School and Delta Centre have remained strong for decades. The school has access to Delta Sensory Gardens through a gate at the basketball pitch, where our students can enjoy the therapeutic outlet that the gardens offer.
Our fleet of three buses allows our students access to the wider community and benefit from social outings. We are lucky enough to own a fourteen-seat minibus, a wheelchair bus, and a nine-seat transporter. Funds for these buses were raised with the help of generous sponsors and friends of the school, and a past parent’s association, and are driven by staff volunteer drivers.
